Lives • Places • Possibilities

A life holds
more than
one story.

And a story can take us further
than we ever expected to go.

Welcome to my writing world

From lives remembered to adventures imagined, my projects explore people, places and the things that connect us. Some begin with a memory. Others with a question. And one begins with a very determined honey badger.

Historical & family writing

Letters to Tuffie

Lives, memories and the search for understanding. A developing historical and family project bringing remembered experience into conversation with documentary research.

Behind the writing

A remembered life and a surviving record can tell different parts of a story. This project makes room for both, while keeping verified facts, recollections and unresolved questions distinguishable.

In development · Publication details to be announced.

Children’s & family adventure

Badger on Board

Meet Rumble: a young honey badger with a busy nose and very firm opinions. An illustrated adventure from the Serengeti to Zanzibar, and a friendship that matters when home feels far away.

A little introduction

Rumble is a young honey badger with a busy nose and very firm opinions.

An unfamiliar smell can stop him halfway through whatever he is doing. A rustle inside a bag can change his plans entirely. He likes to find out how things work, what is underneath them and, whenever possible, whether they can be eaten.

An illustrated coastal story

The Things We Brought

An otter, a sea lion and a blue whale travel along a changing coast. A story about what is precious, what we can release, and what we need help carrying.

Where the story begins

After a storm damages his cove, an otter sets out with a makeshift raft of salvaged possessions. Along the way, he meets a sea lion whose humour hides a vulnerable side, and a whale hoping to hear a voice answer her own.

About Sarah

Curiosity is
a good place
to begin.

I’m Sarah Jean Hernandez. I write across historical and family stories and illustrated fiction, including work under the name S J Hernandez.

I’m interested in what we remember, what we discover and what makes us feel that we belong. My projects move between real lives and imagined adventures, with room for warmth, humour and questions that stay with us.

I’m also developing Inkhorne Publishing, a home for stories that deepen understanding and awaken imagination.
